Brief Description: The result of research aiming to broaden the discussion of the causes of retail decline along Hastings Street of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. The study is a long-term observation of changes in the retail storefront use along Hastings Street spanning a quarter of a century from 1976 to 2001. These changes are considered with respect to overall trends in the Lower Mainland, with the findings being compared to demographics of the surrounding community. A summary of the issues and possible opportunities for remedy are also explored.
